When most businesses think about entering a new market, they picture starting from scratch. Finding premises. Hiring staff. Building a customer base. Waiting months or years before the operation runs at scale. It is the default assumption — and in Romania, it is often the wrong one.

Cross-border market entry does not always mean greenfield setup. Sometimes the smartest move is acquiring what is already there.

When ROVA Group entered Romania, they did it by acquiring Lindab's Romanian operations. No years of building from zero. Immediate market presence, existing customers, existing infrastructure, existing team. Day one, they were operational at scale.

Cross-border market entry doesn't always mean starting from zero. Sometimes the smartest move is acquiring what's already there.

Acquisition as a market-entry strategy is one of the most powerful tools available — and one of the most consistently overlooked. The reasons are partly cultural: businesses default to what they know, and greenfield setup is familiar territory. But the economics of acquisition in Romania make a compelling case for thinking differently.

Romania has a significant number of owner-managed businesses with strong fundamentals — established customer bases, proven revenue, operational teams in place, and meaningful growth potential that current ownership has not fully realised. These are companies built over decades by founders who are now approaching retirement age, in sectors where succession is not straightforward. Many are not listed on any formal sales platform. They do not appear in broker databases. They are known only to people who know the market.

The advantage is not just speed. An acquisition gives an incoming business immediate local legitimacy — an existing brand, existing relationships, existing knowledge of how things work. It eliminates the two to three years typically required to establish credibility in an unfamiliar market. And in Romania, where trust is earned slowly and referrals matter enormously, that head start is worth considerably more than it appears on a spreadsheet.

The challenge is access. Finding the right business, approaching the right owner, and navigating a transaction in a market where off-market deals are the norm requires relationships built over years — not a database search.
